Cilius Victor

Campaigner with Newham Monitoring Project(NMP). NMP was founded in 1980 and came out of local community responses to the racist murder of teenager Akhtar Ali Baig in East Ham. Statutory agencies especially the police had failed to recognise the clear racist motivation behind the murder. NMP’s founding aim was to monitor both racist attacks and statutory responses to them. However, it was not long before the broader issue of police racism and the general criminalisation of the black community became an integral part of NMP’s work in assisting community campaigns for justice and social change.
